Chapter Nine

Azra

"I think the Dark One means to claim Elbezel," Azra said, hardly believing the words coming from his mouth.

Crius was in his chambers, the ones he used to share with Elby, lounging on the balcony with a fruit and cheese plate untouched in front of him and a glass of wine, nearly empty.

Azra flashed back to just a few months ago, when he would creep on his own balcony during Crius and Elby's brunches and would stand there, like a creeper, listening to them talk. He didn't care then what Elby said, he just enjoyed standing there and hearing his voice lift up to him like a bird.

Now, Elby was in his room. Not a room next to the King, but in the King's chambers. If he'd obeyed Azra, then he would also still be in bed, relaxing. Meanwhile, Azra was downstairs, with the only other dragon he trusted enough with this issue.

Crius set down his wine class, looking up at Azra with a cool expression. "I thought the Dark One was a myth?"

He knew his nephew wouldn't make this easy on him. He didn't deserve easy. "It is, it was, I don't know, Crius. I just know that something is happening to Elby. You saw him at our wedding reception. His body had gone pale, and his eyes dark. He looked..."

"Strong?" Crius offered.

"Not like himself," Azra finished.

Crius took another drink and picked up a grape, only to toss it over the balcony. There was no telling which hapless person walking by below had just gotten splattered. "You've always looked at Elby like this anomaly. But, he's an onyx like the rest of us. Despite how you see him as a shining bright daisy growing in a field of trash." Crius gestured to himself making it absolutely clear that he knew who Azra considered a daisy and who was trash. "Maybe this is just him coming into himself? Becoming more—"

"Like you?" Azra asked but then regretted it. His nephew was always sure of himself, arrogant, Azra forgot that he was still young, that he'd recently lost his father. "I'm sorry, Crius, you didn't deserve that. Bozna was nothing but proud of you."

Crius sat straight, raised his chin and dropped his arms to the table, taking up as much space as was possible. "I'm glad my dead father was proud of me. Though, that means less since he wasn't proud enough of me to let me know what he was doing. I could have...not helped him, but talked him out of colluding with that ancient golden bitch."

"So your father never mentioned his feelings about the Dark One?" Azra had known that there were small sects of onyx dragons that believed the Dark One was some kind of savior that would come to rid the world of evil. They worshiped him, but since Azra had thought it was all make believe anyway, he didn't see the harm in letting those groups continue. He would have never guessed that someone as high ranking and reasonable as Bozna would have been one of their members.
